Travelling by Train

You can travel by train to Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens. Be aware that this involves both a train and bus journey because there is no train station at either Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens. When you travel by train to Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens you will go as far as a major regional centre and then take a coach to Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens.

Travel by train from Sydney

Take the train from Sydney to Newcastle Interchange (Hamilton) where you will transfer to a Busways coach service. Coach timetables to and from Newcastle Interchange can be found via the Busways link below. 

There are also private transfers available (see listings under Hire Car / Taxi) if you prefer a little comfort or have been unable to connect with one of the coach services.

– Train timetables from Sydney to Newcastle Interchange – including the coach service from Newcastle Interchange to Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest – see NSW TrainLink trains

– Coach services see the Busways timetable (this provides timetables for the coach services from Newcastle Interchange)

– Hire car services (private transfers) see listings under Hire Car / Taxi.

The XPT costs a little more but provides that extra comfort (be aware that the XPT is not the only option for train travel and more economical tickets can be purchased from TrainLink)

Travel by train from Brisbane

Take the train from Brisbane to Taree where you will transfer to a Busways coach service. The Busways coach service leaves from Taree train station and can drop you in either Tea Gardens or Hawks Nest. Current coach timetables to and from Taree can be found on the Busways website.

An alternative coach service (departing Taree train station) is available from Taree but it does NOT go into Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens. This service stops at The Great Aussie Bush Camp (The Rock on the Pacific Highway). From The Rock you can get a private transfer into town (see our Hire Car / Taxi listing).

    Hawks Nest Fun Facts

    • 1. The Singing Bridge built over the Myall River between Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens ‘sings’ when there is a strong south-west wind.

    • 2. The Jean Shaw Koala Reserve is located at the Northeast of the Singing Bridge. Perhaps the Koalas cross the bridge to visit their families for a picnic.

    • 3. Matt Lauder, designed the local golf course. He was a professional golfer and the nephew of Sir Harry Lauder, a Scottish singer and comedian who was knighted in 1919.

    • 4. Public transport to Hawks Nest is available daily.

    • 5. The name Hawks Nest came from the navigational marker for the entrance to Port Stephens which was the large nest of a hawk.

    • 6. Hawks' nests are made from pine needles, sticks, bark, and soft leaves and can be 70-90cm wide!

    • 7. You can enjoy a picnic and views over Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens from the Lions Park Lookout on Myall Way (Tea Gardens Road).

    • 8. The local Worimi people welcomed five shipwrecked convicts in 1790 who they believed were ancestors returning from the dead (explains their pale skin). They were the first Europeans to arrive in the area.
